"Singing literally changes my chemistry, it's a soul thing" says jazz songstress, Angie McKenzie. Known for her unique ability to get inside a lyric and draw out the story, McKenzie has captivated audiences from the Bay Area to Seattle with her silky, smooth sound and sassy, sophisticated style.

McKenzie grew up in a home filled with an eclectic mix of music. From Stevie Wonder and Prince, to musicals, 80’s rock, and her late father’s love of the blues, there was always something playing in the background. Yet, as a child, McKenzie was too shy to sing. “I lip-synced my way through elementary school glee club.”

Thankfully, while living in Seattle in the early 2000s, McKenzie followed her passion and found her voice. Making up for lost time, she took every opportunity to immerse herself in music and study with talented musicians. She eventually took to the stage, delighting audiences at Tula’s, Egan’s, and other area venues. She counts Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott among her many influences.

A 2015 Jazz Search West Finalist, McKenzie has relocated to her native Bay Area, performing at SF Jazz, Yoshi’s, Freight and Salvage, and the California Jazz Conservatory. “To connect with people through song,” she says. “It brings me great joy.”
